This is the first painted stone created for The Roaming Stones project that I began in anticipation of my 2022 road trip to San Diego. The common feature you’ll see on all “roaming stones” is a blank area on one side of the stone reserved for the person who found the stone to submit information on its discovery.

We were hiking for multiple days in Big Bend. We hiked Santa Elena trail and as we walked along the floor of the canyon I was peeking into a crevice looking for potential wildlife when I saw the stone. I was partially in water so I am happy the river was low enough to allow me to find it. At first I thought it was a phone case and then I reached in and grabbed it and noticed the URL on the back.

My wife wanted me to put it back but I told her I had heard about projects like these being done in other places. When I looked it up she was like “Oh” well that is cool.

We do a fair amount of camping with our RV and geocaching with our kids. We plan on hiding this again during our next visit to another State Park here in Texas and leaving it behind in a Geo Cache instructing the next folks to keep it moving on.

Thank you for doing this. It was a pleasant surprise and a really great story. Maybe we will find another in our travels.
